Interview Best Practices

DO:

  • Use the STAR method for behavioral questions (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
  • Provide specific examples with measurable outcomes
  • Research the firm before your interview
  • Speak clearly and at a moderate pace
  • Show enthusiasm for the position
  • Pause briefly before answering to collect thoughts
  • Apply coaching feedback as you go

DON'T:

  • Give vague or generic answers
  • Ramble - aim for 1-2 minutes per answer
  • Speak too fast when nervous
  • Badmouth previous employers or professors
  • Say "I don't know" without trying to answer
  • Use excessive filler words (um, like, you know)
  • Forget to ask questions at the end

The STAR Method for Behavioral Questions

For questions like "Tell me about a time when..." use this structure:

S - Situation

Set the context. Where were you? What was happening?

T - Task

What was your responsibility? What needed to be done?

A - Action

What specific steps did YOU take? (Focus on your actions)

R - Result

What was the outcome? What did you learn? Quantify if possible.

Coach's Tip: The coach will specifically call out when you use STAR well and when you miss components. This is the gold standard for interview answers!
